Video game music on piano, to MIDI

Game soundtracks are full of piano pieces and piano arrangements that were never published as sheet music. Upload a piano recording of one and get the notes back as MIDI.

Transcribing needs an account — we’ll hold onto your file while you sign in.

From the recording to the notes

Upload a piano arrangement, a piano track from a soundtrack, or your own recording of the piece. You get back a MIDI file with every note, when it started, how long it was held and how hard it was played.

Tick "Separate hands" and the left and right hand come back on their own tracks, which makes the MIDI far easier to learn from.

What you can do with the MIDI

Practise it in Synthesia, slowed down and one hand at a time. Load it into a DAW to rearrange it or change the instrument. Or open it in MuseScore to turn it into a score.

Paid plans also download the transcription as sheet music, a PDF to print or MusicXML to edit.

Piano only

The model is trained on piano. A chiptune, an orchestral track or a full mix will come out messy. Solo piano versions transcribe best, and a clean recording beats a loud one.

Questions

Does it work on chiptune or synth soundtracks?

Not well. It listens for a piano and will try to explain any other sound as piano notes. Use a piano arrangement of the track.

Which hand style should I pick?

Classical for flowing or arpeggiated accompaniments, Jazz when the left hand jumps between bass notes and chords. If one sounds wrong, transcribe it again with the other.

Can I share or sell the MIDI?

The MIDI is yours to practise with. The music belongs to its composer and publisher, so publishing or selling a transcription can need their permission.
