WAV · MP3 · FLAC · OGG

Free transcriptions cover the first 2 minutes of a recording; anything after that is left out. Paid plans go up to 15 minutes.

Transcribing needs an account — we’ll hold onto your file while you sign in.

From a recording you made

If you recorded an improvisation on an acoustic piano, a WAV straight from your recorder or phone is the best source there is. The MIDI you get back captures the take as you played it, so you can edit a wrong note, re-voice it with a different piano sound, or write it down.

FLAC and OGG files are accepted as well, alongside WAV and MP3.

Timing and velocity are kept

The transcription records when each note actually started and ended and how loud it was, not a version snapped to a grid. Rubato, swing and dynamics survive, which matters if you want the MIDI to sound like the performance when you play it back.

Getting a cleaner result

A close, dry recording transcribes best. If you can choose, put the microphone near the piano, avoid a room with a long echo, and record the piano on its own.

Dense passages with a lot of sustain pedal are the hardest thing for any transcription system, and you should expect to tidy those by hand.

Questions

Does a higher sample rate help?

Not noticeably. A standard 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz recording is all the model needs. Microphone placement matters far more.

Can I use a recording of a digital piano?

Yes. A line-out recording of a digital piano is about as clean as input gets and usually transcribes very well.

What do I open the MIDI file in?

Any program that reads standard MIDI: a DAW such as Logic, Ableton or Reaper, notation software such as MuseScore, or a piano-roll app such as Synthesia.
