Video to MIDI

Turn a piano video into MIDI

Filmed yourself or a lesson on your phone? Drop the MP4 or MOV in as it is. The sound is taken out of the video on your own device, and that is all that gets transcribed.

The free plan transcribes recordings up to 10 minutes, 10 minutes every 30 days. Paid plans go up to 30 minutes.

Transcribing needs an account — we’ll hold onto your file while you sign in.

No converting first

There is no need to export the audio in another app. Pick the video, and the browser pulls the sound out before anything is uploaded, which also means a 300 MB phone video becomes a few megabytes on the way.

MP4, MOV and M4V all work, including iPhone recordings straight from the camera roll.

What the camera picks up

A phone on a stand next to the piano records the sound well enough. What matters more is the room: a quiet room and the phone a metre or two from the instrument beats any setting.

Talking, a metronome or a backing track in the video will come through as extra notes, so the cleanest take is just the piano.

Back to the notes

You get a standard MIDI file with every note, its timing and its dynamics, and the sustain pedal. Tick "Separate hands" and the left and right hand come back on their own tracks.

Play it back on the page as falling notes, or open it in a DAW, notation software or Synthesia.

Questions

Is my video uploaded?

No, only its sound. The video stays on your device, and the sound is discarded once it has been transcribed. Only the MIDI is kept, in your history, until you delete it.

Can I paste a YouTube link?

No. Upload a file you have, such as a video you recorded or a lesson you are allowed to download.

Does it read the keys from the picture?

No. It listens to the sound, so the camera angle doesn’t matter, and a video with the keyboard out of shot works just as well.
